Ten years ago two award-winning photographers for San Francisco’s competing daily newspapers Eric Luse and John Ross Storey became committed to producing wines with big personalities and heartfelt passions—characteristics more than skin deep and ones they believed were inherent in California’s soil. During a tasting session in the Spring of 2012 the rough wine seemed to be missing a note. A tweak of 3% Syrah during a blending trial was the ticket adding just the rich berry spice Eric was looking for without masking the brightness of the chewy candied Rhubarb aroma’s coming from the Grenache with the Mouvedre giving proving bits of leathery tannin.
